Boracay in the Philippines offers an outstanding winter beach windsurf and kitesurf holiday destination. Stunning turquoise, flat water, slalom conditions. Voted 2nd place in Condé Nast Traveler's Best Beaches in the World: Readers' Choice Award (2020).
Sailing Spot and Conditions
Bulabog beach on Boracay island has become one of the leading Asian windsurfing and kitesurfing destinations and subequently at peak times it can get very busy. Bulabog beach is made up of 3 bays. The first two are easily accessible. The third is 500m south each of the furthest bay but does have excellent flat water conditions and only accessible from the water for advanced riders. In addition to Bulabog beach Union Bay is accessible in the dry season. Located on Panay island this kite beach is the same position and size as Bulabog but much less busy. To get there you can either kite 5km downwind which takes approximately 15 minutes or take a boat to Caticlan and local taxi. The best time to go to Boracay is November to May which is the dryer season. Ideally placed to enjoy the north east Trade wind which usually blow between 15 and 30 knots. The water is flat in low tide and choppy at high tide. In strong winds, small waves can form on the off shore reef. From June to October, in the low, rainy season the weather is subject to local monsoon conditions. During this time, winds can be less consistent and light although when a depression is coming through the wind will get very strong and prohibitive to sailing safely.
Culture and Activities
Totally unspoilt, this is a true watersports paradise with great bar life and chill out places which are second to none. Other activities include snorkelling, scuba diving, golf, horseriding, numerous watersport fun activities such as banana boat rides, yoga and wonderful spa and massage treatements. The more adventurous can incorporate a little island hopping, backpacking style. Families will feel safe and have enough activities to keep children happy, singles will find a warm welcome and couples will find the location truly romantic. Getting there takes a little perserverance but is well worth it.
