Just 25km north of Essaouira is the incredible windsurfing wave spot of Moulay Bouzerktoune for advanced windsurfers. The Atlantic and North East Trade winds join forces to make conditions that will tax even the most experienced wave sailor.
Sailing Spot and Conditions
The wind is generally 1-2 bft stronger than Essaouira. In summer (June to August) the wind is very strong with smaller waves. In Spring and Autumn the swell is bigger but the wind lighter- averaging 4-6 bft with waves from 1.5 to 3m and wind strenths reaching 30 to 35 knots. The wind is lighter in the morning and great for surfing. International contests take place here with top sailors often seen training including local hero Boujmaa Guilloul. Heading south for the same distance as Moulay. The small sandy beach has flat rocks creating a line of breaking waves from the right.
Culture and Activities
Moulay is a local Moroccan town to at all developed for tourists. Here you eat, sleep live windsurfing with the windsurfing centre and your windsurfing lodge offering the main social opportunities. If you wish to take an excursion we recommend visiting Essaouira approximately 20-25 minutes away is a busy traditional fishing harbour, with historical Medina - the Old Town. Here you can visit a a Hamman and let off some steam (and a layer of skin) with a rub down followed by an essential oil massage. The souk markets in Essaouira medina are the places to find authentice, locally made hand crafted goods. At the end of June the Gnawa International Music Festival attracts over 300000.
