Lemnos offers windsurfing or kitesurfing holidays on a traditional, unspoilt Greek island with flat water & wave sailing from Keros Bay. The windsurf and kitesurf centre is based at Keros Bay. Here you have direct access to the wide, flat water bay with shallow water perfect for all levels. At the other end of the bay there is a wave beach; a great choice for an inexpensive windsurf or kitesurfing holiday with a combination of conditions.
Sailing Spot and Conditions
Keros Bay is a wide, natural bay on the east side of Lemnos and extending some 3km from North to South. In the north, where the main centre is based, smooth flat water is accessible directly from the beach with cross shore winds. To the south are bump and jump conditions with a separate wave beach with onshore winds. The prevailing Aegean winds are from the north east, blowing steadily from March through to October averaging between 4 and 6 Bft with highest wind speed in the morning until around lunchtime and decreasing to F4 until mid to late afternoon. In the north of Keros Bay, the beach launch in front of the centre with a mix of sand and has been cleared of pebbles at the access point. A shallow water area, with waist deep water extends for approximately 250m for 250-300m along the bay water line. The bottom is sandy so soft underfoot when learning. The spot is very special for its flat water conditions, ideal for learning, first water starts to perfecting your power gybe right off the beach. This is not a bathers' beach so there is plenty of room to practice near to the shoreline without having to avoid anyone. A second sailing area, at the southern-most part of Keros Bay offers wave sailing spot. Here the best wave conditions are in the morning, with waves from 1 to 2.5m. It is approximately 2km from the main centre and throughout July and August, when the conditions are right, the centre provides transport with all equipment to the spot free of charge. The entire area is shallow with side onshore winds and perfect, easy jumping conditions.
Culture and Activities
Lemnos is mainly given over to agriculture. Hardly touched by tourism, this is the place for a relaxing holiday when not on the water. Myrina, the main town on the west coast, has a small fishing harbour, local castle, numerous bars and restaurants and a few nightclubs. Approximately 15-20 minutes from our accommodation and 30 minutes from Keros Bay. Visit on market day to buy some of the amazing, locally produced goats cheese and sample local fresh produce such as figs, melons, honey and, of course, olives and olive oil!. Those who love classical history will enjoy the tales of Lemnos and Ancient Greeks & Gods. This is ideal cycling country. Hire a bike or car and enjoy exploring some of the 30 sandy beaches, pretty villages and tavernas around the island.
