Located on the Catalan coast, the huge Bay of Roses has built up an enviable reputation with windsurfers and kitesurfers. An easy scenic drive from Barcelona or Gerona, the magnificent 7km long sandy beach also makes it a hugely popular family holiday destination.
Sailing Spot and Conditions
The on-shore conditions, with approximately 30m of shallow water, offer excellent conditions for progressing to the next level. The prevailing ‘Garbi' wind often increases the dominating thermal offering strong weeks in the peak months. The northerly "Tramontana", usually coming in the cooler months, can also create strong winds in mid summer which is why windsurfing and kitesurfing World Cup events have taken place here for many years now. On good days impressive waves build up near the shore. In the late afternoon the wind often turns to a sideshore from the right and reaches up to 6 beaufort. The light wind mornings are ideal for beginners and children. Thanks to the cross-onshore wind nobody can drift and signs and buoys clearly mark the swimming, windsurfing and kitesurfing areas. This is a thrilling and spacious spot where everybody can make the most of their time no matter whether they are into waves freestylers, freeriders or just starting out.
Culture and Activities
The area makes its living mainly from fishing and tourism with plenty to see and do in the surrounding area when you need a break from the action on the water. There are numerous bodegas and some will even bottle your favourite wine for you as a momento. There are historic ruins and pretty villages to explore. For those interested in art, the Dali museum in Figueres or Dali's house in Cadeques are close by. If you are into adrenalin sports, why not take a trip to Ampuria Brava, which offers free fall parachuting. Cycling routes abound either through flat, countryside roads or up towards the Pyrenees where there is rafting and canyoning. Visit local ancient archaeological sites at Sant Marti d'Empuries or picturesque villages such as L'Escala and Medieval town of Pals, offering excellent tapas bars, restaurants, discos and small boutiques. At the centre you can enjoy multi sport packages including including windsurfing, kitesurfing or stand up paddleboarding. Locally you will find kayaking, wakeboarding, diving, golf, horse riding, cycling and scuba diving.
