Soma Bay is a now established kitesurf resort in the Red Sea. The 7km wide bay is characterized by it's flat water, excellent wind strength throughout the day and remote, desert setting. If it’s a relaxing beach resort with ideal sailing conditions and low key nightlife that you’re after, Soma Bay is an excellent choice.
Sailing Spot and Conditions
Soma Bay is one of the best shallow water and offshore sailing areas for windsurfing and kitesurfing in the south Red Sea. There are two sailing areas. The area known as Soma Bay is based on the peninsular and Abu Soma – which is based near the Movenpick Hotel and Caribbean World Resort on the southern side of the Bay. Both offer wide shallow water areas protected by sand banks and access to the huge Soma Bay. The whole area is soft sand with hardly any stones or coral so boots are not necessary. Wind conditions building in the morning to average 20 knots +. Due to the accelerating effect of the local mountains the conditions can offer and additional 5 knots more than Hurghada. This destination is perfect for learning to windsurf or kitesurf with plenty of room, shallow water in the tidal lagoons and sandbars offering protection. For the more experienced wishing to enjoy the sheer space of Soma Bay - you've got miles and miles.
Culture and Activities
The Soma Bay area offer a variety of activities. The hotels are located either direct on or close to excellent flat water sailing conditions. Shopping and nightlife are limited to the hotels with no town to speak of but it is possible to visit Hurghada around 45 minutes away if you are hankering for nighclubs. If you wish to explore what else the area has to offer why not consider a boat or snorkelling trip. Regular boat trips from both areas with the purpose built marina in Abu Soma offering diving and snorkelling. There are also dedicated diving centres offering a choice of diving sites and range of courses for all levels. The nearby golf course offers 18 holes within a 10 minute drive. Local excursions include Bedouin camp dinners, jeep safaris either as private tours or joining a group excursion.
